We took all the negative feedback and turned it into a plan we want to share with you.
Here where the biggest complaints and how we are fixing them;
Running out of Food
Obviously this one was at the top of our list. Last year we never expected 15 000 people to show up in two days. We didn’t know what to expect and we never put a maximum on the amount of tickets to be sold.
This year it will be 3 days. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Aberdeen Pavilion (Lansdowne) again. Since it’s impossible for us to know how much someone will eat and from what variety they will choose from we’ve done two things. First we are going to have double the amount of vendors. Just to give you an idea, at this time last year we didn’t have one vendor signed up. As I write this we already have more vendors signed up than the total we had last year. It helps that we drastically cut their fees. Second, we now know what to expect and we are limiting our ticket sales to 10 000 people per day so we can better predict how much food will be needed. Tickets will be available April 10th.
A lot of the comments we read gave us the overall sense that the event was OK but wasn’t remarkable. Comments like “If I want a dessert I’ll just go buy it at the shop” Of course to us it’s much more than that but we realized it’s not enough to have variety of desserts under one roof, so here is what we did:
This year we decided to give away $10,000 for the most unique desserts. There’s going to be a panel of judges. We are encouraging each vendor that signs up to create something exclusive to what they normally sell. Some bakers are using it to launch a new dessert or to show their creativity. This way you will try desserts you can only find at Dessertfest.
Hard to Find Parking
We now have free OC Transpo to the event (with printed proof of your ticket, digital not accepted) and a shuttle to take people to the event. Details coming soon.
To alleviate the confusion about what you get with sample tickets, we got rid of them. Instead you will be paying a flat fee at the door and pay the vendors directly for what you want to buy. Ideally bring smaller bills of cash with you.
Of course there’s more but we wanted you to know the big changes. Weekly contests starting soon.
